An effort to assist families in need due to COVID-19
The lockdown due to COVID-19 has disrupted many families with day to day earnings throughout Sri Lanka. Understanding the dire situation, we along with the field guidance of our eastern provincial project coordinator Eshan Sooriyakumar, and in collaboration with Symbioun (pvt) Ltd, an aggressive entrepreneurial organisation helping the community development on a grassroot level, embarked on providing possible solutions.
Building on a prior effort by Eshan’and his acquaintances, we initially managed to share the cost of distributing essential groceries to 35 families. However, this experience only enforced on all of us involved the severity of the situation. "The fact that most of these families were experiencing such hardship, with little to no lime light from the mainstream media at the time of the crisis was surprising."
Realising the ramped up need for funding and resources to carry out this endeavour on a larger scale, the coalition reached out on all platforms for support. Seeing the potential of their initiations abroad, Symbioun appealed to expats and well wishers, who realising the urgency generously donated to the cause. With regard to procurement and distribution, the team of volunteers spear headed by our very own Eshan, managed to create a flexible web with the support of local shops, wholesale food distributors, law enforecement officers and city officials, to provide dry rations to over 540 families affected due to COVID-19 across 21 locations as of April 2020.
We are currently in the making of a group of projects that will continue to assist such affected families during and for the aftermath of COVID-19.
We take this opportunity to commend and thank each and everyone who was an intrical part of this endeavour and we also would like to extend our sincere gratitude of those affected families.
